    1. E-airliners in Norway until 2040. Norway, the largest oil and gas producer in western Europe, is as well a leader in the field of electric transport. It is paradoxical, however it is true. However, they are to strike the global community with something else. National Norwegian short-haul airliners are to be entirely electric by 2040. This process will cover all domestic flights and those to neighboring Scandinavian capitals. Dag Falk-Petersen, chief executive, said that it would need to use intermediary technologies, such as biofuels and hybrid fuel-electric solutions. As well, the Avinor plans to launch a tender offer to test a commercial route flown with a small electric plane with 19 seats, starting in 2025. “When we will have reached our goal, air travel will no longer be a problem for the climate, it will be a solution,” Falk-Petersen said. Electric air travel will also at least halve noise levels and the operating cost of aircraft, Falk-Petersen said. Boeing and Airbus are currently exploring the viability of electric aircraft.

    After abandoning a project for 100% electric planes last year, Airbus decided to refocus its efforts on developing a hybrid model, signing a partnership with British engine maker Rolls Royce and German industrial group Siemens. The first flight is planned for 2020.

    2. Audi Smart Energy Network. Many automobile producers are working on an issue of the electric and hybrid vehicles integration into the grid.  As the following vehicles may vary the charge time depending on the general situation. Hence, as part of a research project, Audi is running a pilot project. This involves combining various sizes of photovoltaic systems with stationary storage batteries. The project is being runned in the Ingolstadt area and the Zurich region. The project involves the other households and participation of the company`s partners. The control software by the Zurich start-up company Ampard distributes the solar power intelligently based on the current or plannable demand from car, household and heating system.  All systems are interconnected to form a virtual power plant, and constitute a smart grid.  They balance out the fluctuations between power generation and consumption, and stabilize the grid frequency by temporarily storing smaller amounts of energy in stationary units at short notice.  This optimizes internal consumption: operators of photovoltaic systems increase their proportion of own-use solar power while cutting their power procurement costs.  Such modern and up-to-date energy initiatives should absolutely be present in our lives.

    3. First energy news from Davos. The world’s economic forum 2018, taking place in Davos, Switzerland, may actually beat the record on the list of the world’s top-politicians. The first day in Davos will be remarkable for the speech of the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.  He mostly elucidated on the energy issues and the problem of the climate change. Modi became the first Indian Prime Minister in two decades to join the world’s top business leaders in the Swiss resort town of Davos. “To save the environment and to fight climate change, my government has planned a major campaign. By 2022, we want to generate 175 GW of renewable energy. In the last three years, we have already achieved 60 GW or around one-third of this target,” he said.  It should be mentioned that in the last three years, India has already achieved 60 GW or around one-third of the target.  Modi stated India had taken the lead in fighting climate change by setting up the International Solar Alliance – a global grouping of more than 121 countries. The grouping’s aim is to work for efficient exploitation of solar energy to cut dependence on fossil fuels. Modi said climate change was among the gravest threats being faced by the humanity. Extreme weather conditions are rising by the day and the world should come together. Actually, it is a good exempl of the energy policy in one of the world`s largest countries.

    4. 100-metre high air purification towers in China. The experimental air purification tower over 100 metres high was built in Xian in Shaanxi province within the Institute of Earth Environment at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Scientists state the improvements in air quality have been observed over an area of 10 square kilometres in the city over the past few months.  The construction was launched in 2015. The project costs are not mentioned, the information is confident. The system works through greenhouses covering about half the size of a soccer field around the base of the tower.

    Polluted air is sucked into the glasshouses and heated up by solar energy. The hot air then rises through the tower and passes through multiple layers of cleaning filters. The system managed to produce more than 10 million cubic meters of clean air a day since its launch. Hence, the level of pollution decreased by 15%. Cao Junji, head of the project, mentioned that the smoke level substantially decreased even during the smokiest days. Although, these results are provisional as the experiment is still in the process. The researchers are to publish the extensive report in March including the total scientific evaluation of the facility`s efficiency. If the experiment proves to be successful, the following towers will be constructed in the other Chinese cities.

    5. New interconnector for Ireland. A £200m electricity project linking Northern Ireland and the Republic will secure energy needs for households and businesses. The negotiations on the launching of the project are long-term however it has just been approved this week by the Planning Appeals Commission (PAC). Approval was granted as well  by the Department for Infrastructure. The plan will see 136km of overhead cables, connecting the two regions. Work is expected to begin this year. It is to be mentioned. Residents of border areas around Co Tyrone, Armagh and Cavan are opposed to the scheme, arguing that, instead, pipes should be laid below ground whereas the already offered option is not feasible. Ellvena Graham, president of the Northern Ireland Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said the project has been among “the top infrastructure priorities for our members since 2009”. They therefore welcome the department’s decision to grant permission for the project.  A study last year jointly commissioned by Ibec and CBI Northern Ireland found that improved grid interconnection would reduce energy costs for businesses and households across the island. Moreover, new interconnector will improve security of electricity supply for Irish businesses and in turn strengthen the Integrated Single Electricity Market to the benefit of both businesses and consumers.
