Today employees of the Nikopol Ferroalloy Plant, Zaporizhzhya Ferroalloy Plant, Dniprospetsstal, Dniproazot, and some other enterprises, have gathered yet again at the entrance of Ukrenergo’s HQ, protesting in the court of Ukrenergo’s tariffs for the transmission of electricity and dispatch control in the II half 2019.
Metallurgists are again accusing Ukrenergo of hitching electricity prices, and demanding to cancel the tariffs. On July 31, during the first picket of steel workers, Ukrenergo’s management had a meeting with the protesters’ leaders and suggested that it would undertake a detailed analysis of electricity prices for the industry sector with due regard to their consumption schedules, and come up with joint proposals to help improve the situation.
But since then, Ukrenergo has received no response from the industry. However, Ukrenergo is always committed to constructive dialogue and cooperation. That is why today the company’s chairman Vsevolod Kovalchuk met with the protesters and offered them to work out a common position that will allow to deal with the price issue of the new electricity market. Moreover, we are ready to jointly voice them and submit them for public discussion.
“The price increase is caused by several factors, primarily, the flawed mechanism of placing special obligations to compensate for the difference in prices between the population and industry, which resulted in Energoatom totally withdrawing from the market of bilateral contracts for industry (which, before July 2019, was the major supplier of energy for industrial enterprises with a uniform consumption schedule). The second factor is the most important, but it takes more time to remedy the situation – high concentration on the generation side – a lot has been written about this issue, and it needs urgent action by the AMCU, the NEURC and the Government, ” Vsevolod Kovalchuk said.
