NPC Ukrenergo has completed the construction of overhead line 750 kV Zaporizhia NPP – Kakhovska with a new substation 750 kV, diversions of OHL 330 kV Kakhovska – Ostrovska and Kakhovska – Khersonska. The OHL is commissioned and goes live.
The official opening of the OHL took place on December 23-24, 2020, at two major facilities – Zaporizhia NPP and SS 750 kV Kakhovska with the participation of the Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal, people’s deputies, representatives of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the European Investment Bank (EIB), representatives of the Kherson Regional State Administration, and other guests.
“This is a truly extraordinary event that deserves special attention. In fact, with this facility, we have relieved the full capacity of the nuclear power plant. The south of Ukraine has received additional guarantees of uninterrupted power supply. Today, at such a solemn moment, I am proud that we are capable of making such a great energy breakthrough. I believe that the construction of this OHL is a long-awaited boost for the power system of our state”, said the Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal.
The new trunk overhead line (OHL) 750 kV Zaporizhia NPP – Kakhovska in combination with other components of the infrastructure project (new SS 750 kV Kakhovska and diversions of OHL 330 kV Kakhovska – Ostrovska and Kakhovska – Khersonska to SS 750 kV Kakhovska) finally solves one of the main problems in the operation of the power system of Ukraine. It removes the last power grid restrictions on the power output of nuclear power plants, which are one of the bottlenecks in the operation of the IPS of Ukraine, which made it difficult to transmit large amounts of electricity to the largest consumption centres. Zaporizhia NPP, which is the largest in Ukraine and one of the largest in Europe, has the opportunity to generate additional 700 MW and operate at a full capacity of 6,000 MW.
In addition, the OHL 750 kV Zaporizhia NPP – Kakhovska is the first element of the future Kakhovska – Prymorska – Isaccea transit corridor. It will significantly expand the capacity for Ukrainian electricity exports to Romania after the synchronization of the IPS of Ukraine with ENTSO-E.
The total cost of the project (construction of the overhead line, substation, and diversions) is € 195 million. The construction was financed by loans and with the close support of the EBRD and the EIB. Besides, due to competition in international bidding, we have managed to reduce the cost of the project. The saved funds (140 million euros) will be used for the construction of SS 330 kV Zakhidna with the installation of gas-insulated switchgear and the southern fiber optic ring with the reconstruction of 1375 km of 330 kV transmission line with lightning rod replacement and installation of appropriate station equipment at 43 substations.
“We are very grateful to our international partners, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the European Investment Bank, our contractors and all those who participated in the construction of OHL 750 kV Zaporizhia NPP – Kakhovska, SS Kakhovska, and other components of this large project. Further on, we plan to build a large 750 kV transit corridor Kakhovska – Prymorska, and thus ensure the power output from Yuzhnoukrainsk NPP and Zaporizhia NPP. This project has already been approved by the Energy Community as a project of common interest”, said Chairman of the Management Board of NPC Ukrenergo Volodymyr Kudrytskyi.
“Economic development and climate protection are interwoven. This project demonstrates the EIB’s desire to develop both directions. Design and construction of a new OHL 750 kV 186 km long between Zaporizhia NPP and SS Kakhovska will strengthen the high voltage transmission network, reduce electricity transmission losses, and increase the reliability of electricity supply to the south of Ukraine. Safe and reliable electricity supply plays an important role in further improving the living standards of Ukrainians. In addition, the project helps Ukraine synchronize its own power system with the European one, as well as participate in European electricity markets and meet future increases in electricity demand in the region”, said Head of representation of the European Investment Bank Jean-Erik de Zagon.
In addition to the full power output of Zaporizhia NPP and the beginning of the creation of a new transit corridor, the OHL Zaporizhia NPP – Kakhovska solves a number of important tasks:
- increasing the operation stability of Zaporizhia NPP when disconnecting any element of the power grid for its power output;
- reducing technological losses in the power grid due to an OHL of the higher voltage class (instead of a long transit OHL 330 kV – the shorter OHL 750 kV);
- strengthening the connection of Kakhovka power node with the rest of the power grid by increasing its transmission capacity, which increases the reliability of RES generation in the south and reduces the risk of disconnection of consumers in case of emergency outages of other power grid lines.
